Creativity is not a function a rational processes alone. Intellectual decisions are made during the process of creating a work of art, but the most essential ingredient in a creative task is an intuitive function we call imagination. This intelligence only works when reason is disconnected temporarily.
Reason has its place in creating art, for decisions in composition as well as other choices must be made. As an artist works, there is a sea-saw movement between intuition and a more conscious kind of thinking. Essentially, creative work is a form of channeling material from a collective source. At least, that is the position of the great psychologist Carl Jung.
